L. Nadine Lindsay, age 91, died at her home in Glidden, IA early on Friday, July 16, 2010. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden with Rev. Barb Huisman officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home from 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday until the time of service. Private graveside rites will be held on Wednesday at the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. She was born November 11, 1918, to the late Dr. Frank and Lola H. Wagner. Upon graduation from Glidden-Ralston Community School in 1936, she attended Iowa State College and Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1940. After nursing at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa and Chicago Lying-In Hospital, she served in the Army Nurse Corps 4 years, with 3 years overseas in Africa and Italy. She married Robert C. Lindsay in 1947. The highlights of her nursing career were being the first Administrator of Shady Oaks, a Fellow with the American College of Nursing Home Administrators, and memberships with the American Red Cross (1941), Women’s Military Service Memorial (1995) and the National WWII Memorial (2000). Nadine served 3 years as Secretary of the Iowa chapter of Nursing Home Administrators. She was appointed by Governor Branstad to serve 3 years each with the Iowa Board of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators and with the Statewide Health Planning Council. Nadine was a 50 year member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder, usher, a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Presbyterian Women and Mariners group. She volunteered for many years at Glidden-Ralston School and received the Friends of Education Award 1994, and Governors Award, 1996 and 2006. She is remembered by her son, R.Stephen (Viki) Lindsay of Turlock, CA; daughter Kristine L.(Mark) Hjelle of Bellevue, NE; brother Dr. Robert E. Wagner of Glidden, IA; five grandchildren Ann (Terry) Ross of Creston, IA; Jon Lindsay of Sergeant Bluff, IA; Megan (Bill) Cook of Lincoln, NE; John (Carrie) Hjelle of Omaha, NE; Rev. Rebecca Hjelle of Kearney, NE; and three great grandchildren Kristin, Jeffery and Aaron Shaw of Creston, IA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lloys H. Wagner, and sister, Joyce W. Dankel. Nadine enjoyed baking to share with friends, knitting, card playing and collecting special teddy bears, Precious Moments and P.Buckley Moss prints. She was the oldest member of her “Birthday Club” of friends. Her 85th birthday was celebrated with a helicopter ride followed by two wishes being fulfilled for her 90th birthday, a hot air balloon ride and being chosen to go on the first Western Iowa Honor Flight for WWII Veterans. Her family would like to express gratitude for the care given by Dr. Peter Morris and the nurses and staff at the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center, Dr. Clayton Schroeder, Methodist Physicians Clinic, and the staff of Iowa Hospice, especially Cindy Bauer, RN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Nadine’s name to the Methodist Estabrook Cancer Center in Omaha, NE and the Glidden Veteran’s Memorial.
