Myrtle "Marie" Stokes

October 28, 1930 — December 20, 2017

Myrtle “Marie” Stokes, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City.      Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Glidden United Methodist Church in Glidden with Rev. Lorinda Hoover officiating.  Organist for the service will be Mary Ross.  Casket bearers will be Don Tuel, Gary Stokes, Jim Stokes, Randy Blair, Ray Hildreth, and Alex Breighner.  Honorary casket bearers will be Tyler Johnston, Ashley Tomson, Crystal Breighner, Katie Tuel, Kim Daniels, and Matt Stokes.  Burial will be in the Lanesboro Cemetery.      Visitation will be held at the church from 1:00 P.M. on Friday until the time of the service.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com.      Born on October 28, 1930 in Calhoun County, she was the daughter of Edward and Alda (Hearrell) Blair.  Marie attended country school through the 8th grade and she graduated from Lake City High School in 1949.  She was active in 4-H and loved biking, rollerskating, knitting and sewing.  Marie was married to Curtis Stokes on January 8, 1950 at the Woodlawn Christian Church in Lake City.  In 1953, they started farming and continued until their retirement in 1991.  After retirement, she worked in the dietary department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital and then the Glidden Graphic.  In her spare time, Marie loved making candy and being active in her church, where she served for many years as the UMC Women's President.      Marie is survived by her daughters: Chris Johnston (John) of Waukee and Annette Stokes of West Des Moines; her son Mark Stokes (Karla) of Ankeny; six grandchildren: Tyler Johnston (Lisa) of Urbandale, Ashley Tomson (Brandon) of Norman, Oklahoma, Crystal Breighner (Alex) of Rochester, Minnesota, Katie Tuel (Don) of Granger, Kim Daniels (Anthony) of Bondurant, and Matt Stokes (Emily) of New Hampton; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother Noel Blair (Anna) of Texas; and her sister-in-laws Arlene Blair of Rockwell City and Rosie Doner of California.       She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curtis; her brothers: Fred, Ed, Jr., George, Bill, Bythel, Merrold, and Estelle; her sisters: Lenore Hildreth and Mata Green.
