Mildred E. Shirbroun, age 100, of Coon Rapids passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017 at Friendship Home in Audubon. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Cindy Seastrom. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service on Friday. Casket bearers will be Mark Smith, Ramsey Smith, Steve Kness, Bill Kness, Carson Kness, and Glenn Lewis. Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for Mildred’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on July 20, 1917 on her family’s farm in Viola Center south of Coon Rapids, she was the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Anderson) Kness. Mildred’s family moved to Cedar Rapids when she was in second grade. The family moved back to Coon Rapids in 1935. Mildred was married to Forrest “Hook” Smith in 1936 at the home of her grandparents in Audubon. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids where they raised their two sons Joe and Tom. Mildred worked for the Iowa Savings Bank for many years. She also worked for the Garst Store, Garst and Thomas Seed Company, and as a telephone operator. Her husband Hook passed away in 1959 and Mildred later married Frank Shirbroun in 1962 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Frank and Mildred lived on a farm north of Coon Rapids until his passing when she moved into town. Mildred was very active in many community organizations including TTT and the Apple Dumpling Gang. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. Her loving and compassionate spirit will be greatly missed. Mildred is survived by her son Joe Smith of Coon Rapids; a step-daughter Charlotte Kunce (Jerry) of Sully, IA; eleven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; two sisters: Jean Vaerk of Cedar Rapids and Delores Korsmo of Alabama; and many other relatives and good friends. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Nellie Kness; four sisters: Wanda, Yvonne, Colleen, and Jolene; four brothers: Floyd, Fred, Howard, and Don; two step-daughters: Donna and Shirley; her husband Forrest “Hook” Smith; her husband Frank Shirbroun; her son Tom Smith; and a grandson Greg.
