Mildred “Millie” Theresa Broich, age 96, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Merlin Schrad as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by Kathy Halbur. Lector for the Mass will be Peg Scheidt. Gift bearers will be Judy Broich and Deanne Simons. Casket bearers will be Danny Anthofer, Tom Schrad, Ken Hoffman, Brian Madsen, Bill Riesberg, and Brent Konradi. Honorary casket bearers will be Sandy White and Carla Schrad. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday. There will be a Rosary at 5:30 P.M. during the visitation. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the Mass.

Millie, as she was affectionately known to most, was born on August 22, 1927 in Westphalia, IA. She was the daughter of Leo and Magdeline (Altman) Gubbels. She grew up in Westphalia where she attended school until the eighth grade when she began to work and help her parents. Millie was the oldest of 11 children. She worked in Omaha for a time and then moved back to Carroll where she worked at Ocoma Foods. Millie was married to Ray Broich on September 20, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. Ray and Millie owned and operated Ray’s Refuse in Carroll for many years. Millie was a kind, loving, and caring person, and she was a very hard worker. She enjoyed playing Bingo and cards. She was a member of St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Catholic Church and was a faithful Catholic and avid church goer. Millie has made her home at St. Anthony Nursing Home since 2018 and her family would like to send out a big “Thank You” to the staff for giving her excellent care.
Millie is survived by her daughter Judy Broich (Deanne Simons) of Lake View; a sister Eunice Madsen Shepherd of West Okoboji, IA; sisters-in-law: Margie Gubbels of Cedar Rapids, Lynette Lehrter of Carroll, Elaine Fleskes (Bob) of Minnesota, and Lois Broich of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband Ray Broich in 1997; her parents Leo and Magdeline Gubbels; her father and mother-in-law Anton and Bertha Broich; four brothers: Kenneth, Donald (Marilyn), Pat, and Virgil Gubbels; seven sisters: Thelma Anthofer (Tony), Henrietta Konradi (Leo), Delores Campbell (Bob), Hyacinth Lappe (Gerald), Germaine Schrad (Duane), and Janet and Judy in infancy; and in-laws: Louie Broich, Adeline Dameron, Irene Riesberg (Ed), Lorraine Kennebeck, Rose Long (Howard), and Lucille Fisher (Leonard).
