Mike was born on September 16, 1941 in Iowa City, Iowa, and was the son of Magnus and Esther Miller. Michael held various jobs in his younger years, but found his place in the Foster Grandparent Program through RSVP.
“Grandpa Mike” as he was known by many, joined the Foster Grandparents Program in 2002. The first few years he volunteered at Fairview Elementary. It wasn’t until 2005, when he started at The Head Start Program that he truly found his love for the program and the kids that he often would affectionately refer to as “his kids”. He was also a regular at the Carroll Public Library during the Summer Reading Program dating back to 2004. He loved to encourage the kids to read and was proud to hand out their stickers when they completed a book. Reading was a great passion of Grandpa Mike’s and he had a large library of his own. If there was a face to represent the Foster Grandparent Program it would be Grandpa Mike. The program meant just as much to him as it did to the kids he served. Grandpa Mike mentored hundreds of children over the years. Many children who didn’t have a male role model in their life considered Grandpa Mike their “real” Grandpa. Michael also enjoyed all kinds of movies and playing games on his Xbox and Play Sation. He also enjoyed playing with his cat Church.
Michael is survived by his stepmother Alice Miller of Carroll; brother Martin (Shelly) Miller of Omaha, NE; brother Marvin Miller of Greenbay, WI; a step-sister, Fran Satterlee of Carroll; step-brothers Larry (Virginia) Schrimbeck of Baltimore, MD, and Lonnie (Linda) Schrimbeck of Warsaw, MO, Delbert (Karen) Cox of Sioux Falls, SD, and Leo Cox of Madison, WI; and several nieces and nephews.
