M.H. "Van" Vanvalkenburg

Marlin H. (Van/Bud) Van Valkenburg, 86, of Altoona, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll died on Saturday, February 19, 2011, at home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday to lie in state until time of service. Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Casket bearers will be John Douglas Van Valkenburg, David Fransen, Richard Drummer, John Dale Van Valkenburg, Jackie Smith, Ronald Loewe, and Russell Loewe. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or First United Methodist Church in Carroll. Marlin was born September 28, 1924 in Williamsburg, Kansas to John Alpha and Daisy Bell (Dow) Van Valkenburg. He married Clara Lucille Loewe on August 1, 1942. Marlin served in the U.S. Navy from May 15, 1944 to February 14, 1946 on LST 833 in the South Pacific. He was a proud WWII veteran. After his military discharge, Marlin and Clara made their home in Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. Marlin farmed, worked for Farm Services, Farm Bureau Insurance, and Ray Lenz Insurance. Marlin and Clara enjoyed spending time with their family and friends. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Those left to cherish the memories of Marlin are: his loving wife, Clara of Altoona; daughter, Barbara (Van Valkenburg) Fransen of Altoona and son, Raymond Van Valkenburg and his wife, Terry, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; four grandchildren: Rebecca (Fransen) Drummer and her husband Richard, of Marshalltown, David Fransen, of Arlington Tennessee, John Douglas Van Valkenburg and his wife, Sandi, of McLean Virginia, and Dianna (Van Valkenburg) Bo and her husband, Gregor, of Westerly, Rhode Island; and five great grandchildren, Amanda Drummer, Matthew Drummer, Connor Bo, Katherine Bo, and Madeleine Van Valkenburg; sisters-in-law, Geneva Van Valkenburg of Salina, Kansas, and Mildred Loewe of Sidney, Iowa; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends. Marlin was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, his brothers, John Van Valkenburg and Kenneth Van Valkenburg, sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice & Everett Loewe, Evelyn & Claude Supernaw, Freda & Orville Turner, Florence & Claude Smith, and Raymond Loewe.
