Merle August Wiederin, age 69, of Glidden, Iowa, passed away at his home on Monday, December 24, 2007 following a long illness.
Born on June 1, 1938 north of Ralston he was the son of Theodore and Rose (Sturm) Wiederin. He was a lifelong resident of the Glidden-Ralston area. He was a 1956 graduate of Glidden High School. Merle was married to Betty Silbaugh on December 6, 1958 at Macomb, Illinois. He was employed by West Central Cooperative in Ralston where he retired from in 1995. He also worked as a farmhand from 1969 until 1992. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden, he had served on the Ralston Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and he played softball nearly all of his life. He was also a softball umpire for many years and was inducted into the 16 inch softball hall of fame. Merle enjoyed gardening, playing cards, rabbit hunting, camping, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife Betty Wiederin of Glidden, Iowa; his seven children: Mary VanScoy and her husband Rick of Ogden, Iowa, Becky Sloth and her husband Duane of Audubon, Iowa, Terry Wiederin of Whittemore, Iowa, Cheryl Kramer and her husband Kevin of Glidden, Iowa, Pam Owen and her husband Duane of Glidden, Iowa, Ron Wiederin and his wife Tammy of Montrose, Colorado, and Ted Wiederin and his special friend Deana Shriver of Jefferson, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three brothers: Bob Wiederin and his wife Karen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Elmer Wiederin and his wife Jolene of Carroll, Iowa, and James Wiederin and his wife Kathy of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters Alice Riedesel and her husband Bruce of Lanesboro, Iowa, and Irene Wurzer and her husband Dan of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four brothers-in-law James Silbaugh of Braggs, Oklahoma, Harry Silbaugh and his wife Janet of Jefferson, Iowa, Gary Silbaugh and Rose Reedy of Byron, Illinois, and Ron Silbaugh and his wife Dee of Marshalltown, Iowa; and a sister-in-law Shirley Clifton of Colona, Illinois. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Dale and Helen Silbaugh, a sister-in-law Judy Silbaugh, and a brother-in-law George Clifton.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, December 28, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden with Father Joseph Dillinger as celebrant. Lector for the mass will be Gary Schon. Gift Bearers will be and Eucharistic ministers will be Gary and Sherry Schon.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 2:30 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by the Parish. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Casket bearers will be Merle’s Grandsons: Chris VanScoy, Jesse Wiederin, Jereme Wiederin, Scott Sanders, Jason Sanders, Brandon Kramer, Ryne Owen, Tyler Owen, and Jacob Wiederin. Honorary casket bearers will be Merle’s granddaughters: Carrie VanScoy, Melissa Jacobs, Jaque Sloth, Jen Wiederin, Jerica Wiederin, Laura Sanders, Brooke Kramer, Shelby Kramer, Shelby Wiederin, Kera Shriver, and Faith Wiederin.
