Maurice “Maury” Bernard Nurse, age 89, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 P.M. on Friday, July 3, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson and Fr. Edmund Tiedeman concelebrating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a Christian Wake Service held at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 12:30 P.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Lectors for the Mass will be Amanda Nurse and Erin Taylor. Gift bearers will be granddaughters: Mya Nurse and Jennifer Weiss. Eucharistic ministers will be Rachel Nurse and Lori Nurse. Casket bearers will be Brady Nurse, Jason Weiss, Zach Morrissey, Nate Nurse, Andrew Nurse, and Noah Nurse. Music for the Mass will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on June 15, 1926 in Carroll, he was the son of Maurice J. and Clara (Sanders) Nurse. He grew up on the south side of Carroll and graduated from Carroll High School in 1944. Immediately following high school he enlisted the United States Navy and served two years during WW II. Maury attended the University of Illinois in Champagne and graduated with a Liberal Arts degree. He was married to Marcella Shoemaker on June 30, 1952 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan by Fr. James Shanahan. The couple lived in Owosso, MI, for two years. They returned to Carroll in 1957 and he began working for the United States Post Office as a mail carrier and eventually became Postmaster until he retired in 1988. Maury was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, the Carroll American Legion, and the Carroll Country Club. He spent many summers as President of the Carroll Little League baseball program. He coached many basketball and football teams for St. Peter and Paul / Holy Spirit Schools which produced many good players for Kuemper High School. Maury received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Sioux City Diocese Catholic Youth Organization. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and taking care of “the hungry pups.” He enjoyed watching all sporting activities and following his kids and later grandkids in various activities. He especially enjoyed watching the Cubs and whichever team his son Nick was coaching. Maury is survived by his wife Marcella of 63 years of Carroll; two daughters: Susan Morrissey of Shawnee, KS, and Michelle Nurse of Des Moines; six sons: Jim Nurse of Carroll, Dan Nurse and his wife Ann of Kansas City, MO, Tom Nurse of Lanesboro, Ken Nurse and his wife Lori of Advance, NC, Steve Nurse and his wife Lori of Cedar Falls, and Nick Nurse of Toronto, Canada; fifteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Leona Hadden of Oskaloosa, and Teresa Fitzsimmons and her husband Gene of Des Moines; a brother-in-law Johnnie Shoemaker and his wife Beth of Churdan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Maury was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lois Smith, and a daughter Maureen Weiss in 2008.
