He spent his early years in Calmar, attending school through the eighth grade. Matt worked on various farms as hired help until 1936, when he went to work at the Haymarket Tavern in Glidden. On September 27, 1938, Matt was united in marriage with Gertrude Klocke at St. Joseph’s Church in Dedham. The couple made their home in Glidden and Matt continued to work at the Haymarket Tavern. In 1941, he started driving Phillips 66 tank wagon for Gerald Fagan. In April of 1944, Matt entered the United States Army and served in the Philippine Theater. Following his honorable discharge in April of 1946, he returned to drive the tank wagon for Gene Jenkins. In 1953, Gene was killed in an automobile accident and Matt purchased the tank wagon from Mrs. Jenkins. Matt operated this business until his retirement in 1976. He spent the rest of his years fishing and taking care of the garden and yard. Matt was a member St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church of Glidden, where he was also a member of the Men’s Club. He was also a member of American Legion Post 386 in Glidden and the Glidden Fire Department for many years. On Sunday, February 15, 2009, Matt died at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He was 94 years old. Matt is survived by two daughters Helen Reis of Coon Rapids and Linda Wenck and husband Jerry of Rio Vista, California; a son Vernon Rothmeyer of Carroll; 10 grandchildren: Kevin Reis and wife Rhonda; Kraig Reis and wife Linda; Kim Reis and wife Kelli; Kelly Reis and wife Mandy; Kris Reis wife Karmen; Kalynne Heue and husband Mike; Kari Vondrak and husband Jesse; Trent Wenck and wife Jennifer; Tiffini Hiss and husband Sean; and Tyler Wenck and friend Amy Mo; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister Vernie Price of Storm Lake; a brother Robert Rothmeyer of Maryland; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Matt was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers: Clarence “Sparky”, Andy, Richard and Walt; a sister in infancy; and his son-in-law Joe Reis.
