Mathias Theodore, son of John and Lucy Mattes Rothmeyer, was born September 23, 1914, in Dedham, Iowa. He spent his early years in Calmar, attending school through the eighth grade. Matt worked on various farms as hired help until 1936, when he went to work at the Haymarket Tavern in Glidden.
On September 27, 1938, Matt was united in marriage with Gertrude Klocke at St. Joseph’s Church in Dedham. The couple made their home in Glidden and Matt continued to work at the Haymarket Tavern. In 1941, he started driving Phillips 66 tank wagon for Gerald Fagan.
In April of 1944, Matt entered the United States Army and served in the Philippine Theater. Following his honorable discharge in April of 1946, he returned to drive the tank wagon for Gene Jenkins. In 1953, Gene was killed in an automobile accident and Matt purchased the tank wagon from Mrs. Jenkins. Matt operated this business until his retirement in 1976. He spent the rest of his years fishing and taking care of the garden and yard.
