Mary E. Walkup, age 80, of Glidden passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Glidden with Rev. Brian Camara officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 P.M. On Monday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden. The casket will be moved to the church at 9 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Music for the service will be by Mark and Marlys Conner and Judy Reever. Casket bearers will be grandchildren: Steve Stonehocker, Todd Walkup, Jeff Walkup, Michael Douglas, Jeremy Douglas, and Adam Carter. Honorary casket bearers will be her remaining grandchildren and great grandchildren. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Born on February 28, 1935 in Carroll, she was the daughter of Ray and Hilda (Walters) Stoolman. Mary was a lifelong resident of Glidden and graduated from Glidden High School in 1953. Following high school she worked as a bookkeeper for Moorhouse Lumber Yard in Glidden. She was married to Howard Douglas in October of 1955. Howard had three children: Gary, Rick, and Jerilyn and to this union were born two children: Curt and Kent. The couple owned and operated Glidden Farm Equipment for many years. Howard passed away in 1984. Mary was married to Ed Walkup on June 13, 1987 at the Presbyterian Church in Glidden. Ed and Mary lived on a farm south of Glidden all their married life. Over the years Mary had several jobs including working at Mary Moorhouse’s travel agency, being a house director for Delta Zeta Sorority at Iowa State University and working at the Hy-Vee Flower Shop. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Glidden where she served several terms on the church session and taught Sunday school. She was also active with the Presbyterian Women and Entre Nous. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, flowers, decorating, and shopping. She was an avid Iowa State Cyclone Fan, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and many good friends.
Mary is survived by her husband Ed of rural Glidden; a son Curt Douglas and his wife Vicki of Sandpoint, ID, a daughter Jerilyn Carter of St. Louis, MO, a son Rick Douglas and his wife Nancy of Anamosa, IA, a son Gary Douglas and his wife Cheri of Payson, AZ, a daughter-in-law Annette Douglas of Glidden; Ed’s children: Joyce Stonehocker of Newton, IA, David Walkup and his wife Janet of Osceola, IA, and Paul Walkup and his wife Jenni of Glidden; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; a brother Richard Stoolman and his wife Dora of West Branch, IA; three sisters-in-law Agnes Stoolman of Carroll, Maxine Tryon of Glidden and Charlotte Smith of Phoenix, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, a son Kent Douglas, a sister Maxine Jahde, and a brother Don Stoolman.
