Mary L. Smith

Mary L. Smith, age 98, of Coon Rapids passed away on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. A visitation will be held from 5 - 7 P.M. on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. A private family graveside service will be held at Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on August 14, 1918 on her family’s farm northeast of Creston, IA, she was the daughter of Emmet and Anna (Land) Danielson. Mary was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Lutheran Church in Creston as a girl. She graduated from Creston High School in 1934. She attended A.I.B. in Des Moines and then worked at an insurance agency. She was married to Willard “Toots” Smith on December 22, 1945 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Coon Rapids. Mary helped out on the farm and grew a big garden with flowers. She belonged to several organizations including the Coon Rapids Garden Club, the United Methodist Women, Rebekah Lodge and the Noble Grands, Eastern Star, Star Progressive Club, and the H and H Club. Mary and Toots moved into Coon Rapids in 1964 and began to spend the winters in Chandler, AZ. Mary is survived by her children: Margaret Rogers (Richard) of Woodward, IA, and Daniel Smith of Coon Rapids; three grandchildren: Michele Wald (Mike) of Ankeny, IA, Jeannie Dawson (James) of Ft. Dodge, IA, and Michael Smith (Lorena) of Carroll; ten great-grandchildren: Phoebe, Tristan, Ashton, Jackson, Maddie, Birdy, Joseph, Katherine, Emma, and Amber; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Emmet and Anna Danielson; her step-father Carl Swanson; a brother Robert Danielson; and a great-grandson Timothy.
