Mary Philemia Kerwood, age 89, of Carroll died at the Carroll Health Center on August 21, 2011 where she has made her home for the past two and a half years. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday August 26, 2011 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Rev. Timothy Schott as Celebrant. Lectors will be Pat TanCrete and Barb Thielan. Gift Bearers will be Shannon Rawls and Megan Houston. Eucharistic Ministers will be Joan Kerwood. Pianist will be Mrs. Marcy Anderson and soloist will be James Nedved singing on Eagles Wings. Casket Bearers will be James Nedved, Matt Nedved, Dan Nedved, Michael Kerwood, Mark Kerwood, Don Schon, and Robert Kerwood. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 P.M. by St. Lawrence Parish. Interment will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery. Born on October 14, 1921 at Pocahontas, Iowa, and was the daughter of Robert and Ann (Hallinan) Cunningham. She was married to Don Kerwood in November 23, 1940 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Carroll with Msgr. Lynch as the celebrant. The Kerwoods farmed for many years south of Glidden retiring to Carroll on November of 1984. In earlier years Mary was a part time cook at the Glidden- Ralston School and also a home maker. While living in Glidden she was a member of St. Elizabeth Seaton Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild of the Church, and the Rosary Society. She has been a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church since moving to Carroll. As a young girl she attended Pocahontas schools until the 8th grade and then attended and graduated from St. Angela’s Academy in Carroll. In those years the family belonged to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In her spare time she enjoyed crossword puzzles, eating out with her friends, attending her grandchildren’s activities, watching television, her Irish Heritage programs, and making quilts for her family. Surviving are three sons: Ronald Kerwood and his wife Ella Jean of Carroll, Larry Kerwood and his wife Carole of Houston, Texas, and David Kerwood and his wife Joan of Boone, Iowa; a daughter Patricia Nedved and her husband Gerald of Garner, Iowa; 10 Grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 nieces; and 4 nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1999, and 3 sisters and their husbands: Eleanor Webber and husband Marvin, Bernadine Podesta and her husband John, Helen Wenck and her husband Louis.
