Mary Ann H. Compton, age 89, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2026 after a brief stay at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. The Celebrant will be Fr. Craig Collison. Lectors for the Mass will be Amy Rohe and Lily Trecker. Music for the Mass will be by Dennis Morgan as organist and Carol Christensen and Kevin Langel as Cantors. Gift bearers will be her daughters: Susan Trecker, Tricia Brandt, and Mary Langel. Mass servers will be Gavin Trecker and Rylan Hostetler. Casket bearers will be grandsons: David Trecker, Nathan Brandt, Adam Brandt, Jonathan Brandt, Tyler Brandt, Kevin Langel, and Scott Langel. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters Sara Astleford, LeAnn Hostetler, Amy Rohe, Anna Elbert, and Abby Kruse. Burial will be in the Union Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.
A Rosary will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids at 4:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 followed by visitation from 5 – 7 P.M. The casket will be moved to Annunciation Catholic Church at 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. prior to the Mass.

Mary Ann was born on December 22, 1936 in Coon Rapids, IA. She was the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Brincks) Berger. She grew up in Coon Rapids. Mary Ann worked at Armour Creamery in Coon Rapids and did seasonal work at Garst and Thomas Seed Company. She was united in marriage to Bill Compton on May 14, 1957 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. The couple raised their three daughters in Coon Rapids and were members of Annunciation Parish. They were also the caretakers for Union Township Cemetery for many years. Mary Ann enjoyed reading, playing cards, dancing, flowers, feeding the birds, and most of all spending time with her family. She could play the accordion and the organ by ear. She was an excellent cook and was known for her popcorn balls, frosted brownies, and homemade noodles.
Mary Ann is survived by her three daughters and their families: Susan Trecker (Joe) of Coon Rapids, Tricia Brandt (Jerry) of Manning, and Mary Langel of Ogden; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren with three on the way; a sister-in-law Cheryl Conroy of Carroll and Janet Sondgeroth of Carroll; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 2019; her parents Joe and Josephine Berger; her in-laws Dorothy and Russ Heuton; two brothers: Elmer Berger and Edwin Berger (Helen); and a great-granddaughter Shelby Astleford.
