Marjorie Lavine Berning, age 86, of Lake View, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Blackhawk Life Care Center in Lake View where she has made her home for the past two years. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, January 3, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake with Fr. John McGuirk as Celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be her son Robert Berning. Gift bearers will be Haylee and Dylan Scheffler. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M., on Sunday where there will be a Christian Wake held at 7:00 P.M. . The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Monday to lie in state until the time of service. An honor guard will be formed at the church by the Antonian Nurse’s Alumni Association. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Jake Schwaller, Jamie Renze, Cory Weber, Grant Sholty, Matt Scheffler, and Haylee Scheffler. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Born on May 13, 1924 at Carroll, Iowa, she was the daughter of Milford Irvin and Carolyn Lucille (Slechta) Miller. She grew up south east of Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1941 and was class salutatorian. She then attended Gregg Business College in Chicago and later graduated from the Antonian School of Nursing in Carroll. She was married to Norbert John Berning on September 1, 1948 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carroll with Msgr. P.J. Lynch as Celebrant. The couple farmed between Arcadia and Breda until they moved to Lake View in 1969. Marjorie worked for many years as an insurance secretary for doctors in Carroll and Sac City. In her younger years she worked as a proofreader for the Carroll Daily Times Herald. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake. In her spare time Marjorie enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving are her two sons: Robert Berning of Carlisle, Iowa, and Keith Berning of Lake View, Iowa; a daughter Sandy Weber and her husband Mark of Early, Iowa; six grandchildren: Amy Scheffler (Matt), Cari Sholty (Grant), Jamie Renze (Jamie), Jake Schwaller (Sarah), Molly Vondrak (Mike), and Cory Weber (Barb); thirteen great grandchildren; a brother-in-law William Berning Jr. and his wife Betty of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; five sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Janning and her husband John of Carroll, Agnes Tigges of Des Moines, and Marian Berning of Breda, Viola Berning of Carroll, and Dorthea Berning of Cedar Falls; a step sister-in-law Naomi Ludwig of Mt. Carmel; and many nieces and nephews. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother Kenneth Miller.
