Margaret Emilia Borkowski, age 89, of Carroll and formerly of Westside passed away on July 23, 2009 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Born on September 10, 1919 at Arcadia, Iowa, she was the daughter of Otto and Rosa (Boldt) Vetter. She grew up on her family’s farm near Arcadia where she attended country school as a girl and enjoyed playing church league softball. Margaret was the first baby baptized by Pastor Tews of Zion Lutheran Church in Ardadia. She was married to Earl Borkowski on December 12, 1939 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll. The couple farmed in the Arcadia – Westside area. Margaret worked as a cook at the Brown Derby, Denny’s, the Carroll Country Club, Sir Patricks, and the County Home. In her spare time she enjoyed card club at the Rec Center, volunteering for New Hope Village, and spending time with her family. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia.
Surviving are three daughters: Joyce O’Tool of Sac City, Sheryl Liechti and her husband Jim of Arcadia, and Jolene Halbur and her husband Gary of Roselle; a son Gregg Borkowski and his wife Cindy of Denison; 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and three sisters: Bernice Branning of Manning, Phyllis Mumm of Westside, and Ruth Riessen of Vail.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl, a daughter Lola Bolster, a grandson Jeff Liechti, a son-in-law Dennis O’Tool, two brothers: Albert and Raymond Vetter, two sisters: Ida Schmidt and Selma Dalgety, a brother Virgil at age 4, and a sister Valeria in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, July 27, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia with Pastor Ben Dose officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn & Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 12:00 P.M. on Monday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Landon Borkowski, Tanner Borkowski, Seth Liechti, Ross Liechti, Tedd Liechti, Benn Liechti, and Doug Halbur. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters: Lisa Talbot, Leighann LaRocca, Lori O’Tool, Renee Gramowski, Michele Pudenz, Kellie Jons, Kim O’Brien, and Taylor Borkowski.
