Mabel Farrell, age 90, of Scranton passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the Church of Christ in Scranton with Pastor Bob McKnight officiating. Organist for the service will be Laura McKnight. Pall bearers will be Mabel’s grandchildren. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 A.M. on Saturday until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton and online condolences will be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on October 28, 1925 on her family’s farm near Scranton, she was the daughter of Theodore and Lillian (Kirk) Walker. She grew up on the farm and graduated from Scranton High School in 1942. Following high school she went to Washington D.C. and worked as a clerk for the federal government and met her future husband. She was married to William Farrell on November 25, 1945 in New York. The couple made their home in Port Byron, NY and then moved to Springfield, OH in 1951. Mabel and Bill moved back to Iowa in 1954 where they raised their family. She worked for Hunter Farms as a secretary. Mabel was active with RSVP and the Foster Grandparent’s Program in Carroll. Mabel loved to read and she also enjoyed walking, sewing, knitting, cooking, growing flowers, gardening, and following Iowa Hawkeyes basketball. She moved to Boone in 2012 where she lived at Linden Apartments and then to Madrid in 2014 where she lived at Madrid Community Assisted Living. Mabel is survived by her children: Sherry Lee Ferris of Madrid, William Buster Farrell (Nicki) of Maumee, OH, and Michele Dee Farrell of Detroit, MI; four grandchildren: Matthew Ferris (Tara Sheeder) of Woodward, Kirsten Ferris of Boone, Shannon Wolfe (Chris) of El Cajon, CA and Ian Farrell (Heather) of Maumee, OH; five great grandchildren: Jaycie, Kylee, Trenton, Wyatt, and Sullivan; sister Margy Walker of Hermitage, PA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William in 1980, two sisters: Dorothy Bloomstrom and Ann Hanneman, four brothers: Ted, James, Harold, and Marvin; and a great granddaughter Gabrielle Farrell.
