Luetta Meggers

March 18, 1936 — October 7, 2019

Luetta Mareah (Johnson) Meggers , age 83, of Westside, IA, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2019 at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, NE.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia with Pastor Ben Dose officiating.  Organist for the service will be Rebecca Dose.  Casket bearers will be Jeff Gearig, Casey Meggers, Philip Meggers, Rodney Frank, Nathan Paul, Kelvin Grasz and Kyle Forsyth (honorary).  Burial will be in the Westside Cemetery.

Friends may call at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia from 5 – 7 P.M. on Monday evening.  Visitation will resume at the church from 9:30 – 10:15 A.M. on Tuesday.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Luetta’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com

Born on March 18, 1936 to Francis F. and H. Elizabeth (Hagaman) Johnson. Luetta graduated from Carroll Public High School in 1954 and was a proud member of the marching band. She married Duane Meggers on October 8, 1955. They were blessed with four children; David, Larry, Dennis and Wendy. They farmed south of Westside and Vail into the early 80’s. Luetta worked for law firms in Vail, Denison, and Carroll.  The latter and very satisfying portion of her career was her employment at St. Anthony Regional Hospital, Carroll, IA.

Duane & Luetta moved into Westside in 1984 and resided there until September 2016 when they moved to Fort Calhoun, NE to an assisted living facility and to be closer to one of their children.  She passed away peacefully at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair, NE.

She enjoyed participating in various social and card clubs with a special fondness for euchre.  She took joy crocheting, quilting, and gardening as well.  Luetta was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, IA.  She also held membership in American Legion Auxiliary of Westside, IA

She had a childhood love of horses and passed that love on to her children.  Day drives around the country with Duane and spending time with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy.  Luetta had a delightful sense of humor and often described herself as “Weird but Wonderful.”

Luetta is survived by her children: David (Jeanette) Meggers of St. Louis, MO; Larry (Lili) Meggers of Norwalk, IA; Dennis (Sue) Meggers of Truro, IA and Wendy (Kelvin) Grasz of Blair, NE; grandchildren: Philip (Becky) Meggers, Omaha, NE, Kristina (Nate) Paul, St. Louis, Mo, Emily (Jeff) Gearig Montpelier, OH, Casey (Briana) Meggers, Twin Falls, ID and Marcia (Kyle) Forsyth, Menan, ID, Antonio Castano, Teresa Castano, Andrea Castano and Angie Castano.  Great-grandchildren: Maddison, Jason and Elsa Gearig; Jackson, Claire and Oliver Paul; Hadley and Ryleigh Forsyth; Alehandra Salcedo Velez,, Maria Isabel Carabali Velez and Alexandra  Bedoya Velez; sister-in-law Alma Johnson;  nieces, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.

Luetta was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and H. Elizabeth (Hagaman), Duane’s parents William F. and Elvira (Gruhn) Meggers, brothers-in law William and Edward Meggers, her brother, C. Arnold Johnson, her sister Phyllis McDonald, brother-in-law, John (Jack) McDonald, sister-in-law Dorothea Ehlers and brother-in-law Wilbert Ehlers.
