Lucy was born on September 25, 1928, in Carroll, IA. She was the eldest child of Lawrence John, Sr. and Mary Margaret (Brincks) Gute. She grew up on the family’s farm south of Carroll and attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School through 8th grade, later earning her GED. Always an independent spirit and not one to conform to convention, Lucy moved to Denver, CO in the early 1950s. She worked the majority of her career as an administrative professional with Gardner Denver, a manufacturer of mining and industrial equipment. Lucy had an intense interest in exploring the world, travelling to destinations including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. She travelled to Cuba with her sisters, Marilyn and Juanita, in the 1950s, a short time before the country’s communist government was established. Charles “Charlie” L. Sandquist and Lucy were married on May 28, 1983, at Higgins Chapel in Denver, Colorado. Lucy and Charlie moved to Carroll, IA in 1993.

While living in Carroll, Lucy volunteered at the St. Anthony Regional Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the New Hope Village Bargain Shop. She also participated in water aerobics classes at the Carroll Recreation Center and was a member of Holy Spirit Parish. While at home, Lucy enjoyed sewing and reading. Lucy was an inspiration to her family in numerous ways. While in Denver, she would chauffeur visitors around the city in her Volkswagen beetle. On her trips back home to Iowa, she would regale listeners with stories of her travels and life in the city. She always had an open and empathetic ear to any troubles her family, especially nieces, were having. Finally, Lucy exemplified the importance of always being well-dressed no matter the occasion. For the last nine months of her life, Lucy enjoyed spending time with her brother, Alvin “Bud” Gute who also lives at Journey. Lucy and Bud would reminisce about growing up on the farm milking cows, picking corn by hand, and generally “learning how to work hard.”

Lucy is survived by brothers: Alvin Gute of Carroll, Vernon Gute (Linda) of Modale, IA, Dennis Gute (Ann) of Carroll, and Eugene Gute of Afton, IA; sisters: Marilyn Schram of Papillion, NE, Juanita Bruno (Joe) of Marseilles, IL, and Arlene Brooks of Haines, AK; stepdaughter Cheryl Sandquist of Colorado, step-granddaughter, Christie (Andrew) Heinrich and her two step-great-grandchildren, Alex and Ariel of Colorado; aunts, Arlene Brincks of Carroll and Margie Hupp of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Mary Gute; her spouse, Charles (2015); brother, Larry Gute; nephew, Michael Gute; sister-in-law, Doreen Gute; and brother-in-law George (Rudy) Schram.
