Lucille Rother

Lucille M. Rother, age 85, of Holstein, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll, Iowa, died at the Good Samaritan Center at Holstein on July 2, 2009. She was born on October 8, 1923 at Westside, Iowa, and was the daughter of John and Emma (Segebart) Bock. As a young girl she attended and graduated from Westside High School and then attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught country school for two years when she met and married Raymond Rother on September 17,1949 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Hinck officiating. She was married for 47 years before her husband died in April, 1997. Upon marriage they moved to Wolbach, Nebraska, where she was a farm wife and mother. In 1961 they moved back to Carroll where she raised her family. While living in Carroll she worked at Lee’s Store, Sernetts Store for nine years, and Spurgeons Store for five years before retiring. Upon retirement she did volunteer work for New Hope Village Stores. In 2001 she moved to Estherville to be closer to her daughter. She was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and while in good health was a member of the LWML of the church, the RSVP, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and the DAV. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling, bird watching, gardening, flowers, and fishing. She learned to play the piano after her daughter went to college. She especially liked fishing with her grandsons and she had a "green thumb" at growing African violets. She loved birds and recognized the sounds of birds even before she saw them. She enjoyed her family. Surviving are a son David D. Rother and his wife Kaci of Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter Diana Pollard and her husband Rev. Terry Pollard of Alta, Iowa; two grandchildren: Brad Sexe and his fiancé Elissa Hansen of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Danny Sexe of Estherville, Iowa; three step-grandchildren: Chad Pollard and his wife Karey of El Dorado Springs, Missouri, Lance Pollard of Overland Park, Kansas, and Leandra Pollard of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; two step-great grandchildren; Mackenzie and Myleigh Pollard; a sister Lois Smith of Wahoo, Nebraska, seven nephews: Mark Smith, Jim Smith, Myron Gertz, Allen Bock, Doug Bock, Larry Bock, Roger Bock; and three nieces, Beverly Tornow, Irene Gertz, JoAnn Bertlesen, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Dennis, two sisters Lillian and LaJune, three sisters in infancy, a brother Leo, a brother-in-law Roger Smith, and a nephew David Smith. She will be dearly missed by family and friends. Funeral service will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll at 10:30 am Tuesday July 7, 2009 with Pastors David Anthony and Brian Licht officiating. Interment will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5PM on Monday where there will be a Prayer service at 7PM. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 AM Tuesday where the body will lie in state until time of the service. Organist for the funeral will be Jan Hoff. Casket Bearers will be Roger Bock, Larry Bock, Doug Bock, Jim Smith, Merill Tornow, Brad Sexe, Danny Sexe.
