Lucille Elizabeth Onken, age 90, of Lidderdale passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale with Pastor William Weiss officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Tami Biggerstaff and trumpeter will be Vicki Grundmeier. Casket bearers will be: Scott Wenck, Rick Onken, Bruce Knute, Stan Berns, Sam Berns, and Stuart Berns. Honorary casket bearers will be Lucille’s Grandchildren: Chad Rapp, Adam Onken, Holly Rapp, Cassia Onken, and Haley Lutwitze. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Lidderdale. Born on January 26, 1924 on her family’s farm south of Lidderdale, Iowa, she was the daughter of William and Freda (Hebbel) Berns. Lucille was baptized on May 25, 1924 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 11, 1938 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale. She grew up on the farm and attended country school as a girl. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1941. Lucille was married to Virgil A. Onken on February 11, 1942 by Pastor Rudolph Herrmann also at Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage. The couple made their home northwest of Lidderdale and Lucille was active in their farming operation. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale where she was active with the altar guild and taught Sunday school. Lucille loved to prepare meals for her family and spend time with her grandchildren. Lucille is survived by a daughter Ruby Lutwitze and her husband Ron of Carroll; a son Roger Onken and his wife Carol of Carroll; four grandchildren: Adam Onken of Leigh, Nebraska, Holly Rapp and her husband Chad of Centennial, Colorado, Cassia Onken of Bensonville, Illinois, and Haley Lutwitze of Iowa City; a brother Don Berns of California; two sisters: Gladys Liebsch-Heuton of Rembrandt, Iowa, and Viola Fricke of Nebraska; a sister-in-law Bonnie Onken of Carroll; a brother-in-law Jack Hembree of Yuba City, California; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Virgil in 1987, four brothers: Gilbert, Fred, Earl, and Ivan Berns, and three sisters: Leta Wenck, Irma Hoffman, and Betty Badder.
