Butch was born on August 1, 1945, to John B. and Theodora (Schoeppner) Janning. The ninth of ten children, he was raised on a farm north of Carroll and graduated in 1963 from Kuemper Catholic High School. Before serving in the Army, Butch worked for his brothers. Shortly after his service, Butch created Janning Construction Company and began creating the unique designs that have defined his work. On November 24, 1967, he was united in marriage to Julia Junker, and they were blessed with four daughters.

When Butch was not in the bleachers cheering on his girls and then his grandchildren, he could be found fishing (only, he claimed, when Julie let him), trapping and hunting. Butch also took great pride in his craftsmanship. His rocking horses, shadow boxes, home remodels, wooden tops, and other designs are each one of a kind. Two of his greatest contributions are the Memorial at the Glidden Cemetery and his restoration of the McNaught House, where he and Julie have lived for 22 years. Butch never came across a problem he couldn’t fix (duct tape was a constant companion). In spare moments during the day, many would see Butch and his metal detector on the hunt for treasure, and he regularly kept the ditches clean of cans (and asparagus). He loved lending a helping hand whenever and wherever needed, and this generous spirit will be greatly missed.

Butch is survived by his wife, Julie; daughters, Dana (David) Schon, Jennifer (Rodney) Burns, Sara (Kevin) Fleecs, and Robin (Tony) McAninch; grandchildren, Jay,

Greg, and Rachel Schon, Carter (Morgan), Meg, and Nate Burns, Adrianna, Julia, and Grant Fleecs, and McKenzie, Madison, Malia, and Meradith McAninch; a sister Lois (Dan) Mein, and a brother Bernie Janning; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sisters Louise Grossman and Dorothy Becker, and brothers Lawrence, Jerome, John, Kenneth, and Earnest.
