Louis William Grade, age 94, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Ryan Roehrig officiating. Organist for the service will be Abe Batten. Casket bearers will be his sons, Dan Grade and Geno Grade, his son-in-laws, Kevin Schroeder and Andy Anderson, and his grandsons Alex Grade, Luke Anderson, Nick Schroeder, and Zach Schroeder. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Lidderdale with military honors conducted by the Iowa National Guard and the Carroll American Legion.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M.

Lou, as he was known to most, was born on October 10, 1928 on his family’s farm near Churdan in Jasper Township. He was the son of Wilhelm and Marie (Haase) Grade. Lou’s family moved to a farm near Lake City when he was a young boy, and he took over the farm after the 8th grade. He met his future wife Doris Kruse at a Walther League event, he and Doris were engaged prior to Lou being drafted into the United States Army in 1951. He served with distinction during the Korean Conflict. He was combat wounded on the front lines and was honorably discharged. He earned the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Following his military service, he returned to the farm in Lake City. Lou and Doris were married on September 3, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale by Pastor Hermann. The couple made their home on the family farm until moving to Carroll in May of 1958. Lou was employed as the dispatcher for the Carroll Communications Center for 26 years.
Lou is survived by his children and their families: Trish Titus of Carroll, Dan Grade (Lori) of Wauwatosa, WI, Geno Grade (Deb) of Glidden, and Kathy Schroeder (Kevin) of Carroll; a son-in-law Andy Anderson of North Logan, UT; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Lou was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 2006; his parents Wilhelm and Marie Grade; his mother and father-in-law Charles and Marie Kruse; two sisters: Christjana Lilly (Ray) and Helen Schroeder (Clarence); his daughter Julie Johnston in 1991, and daughter Sher Anderson in 2023.
