Louis Anton Broich, age 80, of Carroll passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Born on January 26, 1927 at Willey, Iowa. He grew up in the Willey-Carroll area. At the age of 18 he went into the Army. He was a World War II veteran serving in Korea from February of 1946 until August of 1947. He was discharged as a Sargent. After his discharge he went to work at Ocoma Foods. He was married to Lois Stuhr on January 17, 1950 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Maple River. After marriage they lived in Rockwell City where Louis worked at Juergens Hatchery until its closing. In 1959 they moved back to Carroll and he worked at Heider Manufacturing until he became custodian at Carroll High School, and later head custodian, and was employed there for 30 years until he retired in April of 1990. The couple celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in 2007.
Louie also had a tree service and sold fireplace wood, splitting it all manually. He also had a lawn service and sodded many homes and businesses in the Carroll area. He also put up many chain link fences. After retirement he worked in the summer and fall for the Parks and Recreation Department for 5 years. He also sorted corn for Renze Hybrid for the past several years.
Louie loved working outdoors on his lawn and in his garden, and helping others with theirs. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes. He enjoyed going to auctions and buying and refinishing antique furniture.
He was an active member to the Presbyterian Church serving as head usher for 30 years. He was an Elder in the church and on the building and maintenance board. He was a member of Post 0694 of the American Legion in Arcadia.
Surviving are his wife Lois of Carroll; his children: Marcia Moctezuma and her husband Angelo of Omaha, David Broich and his wife Kathy of Elkhart, Iowa, Diane McClellan and her husband Mac of Cedar Rapids, Felicia Parker and her husband Donn of Omaha, Kim Stuhr of Papillion, Nebraska, and Teresa Coppinger of Cape Codd, MA, 13 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sisters: Adeline Dameron and her husband Bob of California, Irene Koithan and her husband George of Carroll, Lynette Lehrter and her husband Al of Carroll, Lorraine Kennebeck of Carroll, and Elaine Fleskan and her husband Bob of Annadale, Minnesota; a sister-in-law Mildred Broich of Carroll; a brother-in-law Leonard Fischer of Carroll; a brother-in-law Lyall Stuhr and his wife Dage of Ottumwa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Bertha Broich, his in laws Arthur and Rose Stuhr; a brother Ray Broich, a sister Rose Long, a sister Lucille Fischer, two brothers-in-law Ed Reisenberg and Howard Long, and niece Joan Eischeid, and a great nephew Jason Tigges.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Carroll with Rev. Michael Fitzsimmons officiating. Organist for the service will be Sally Patten and the soloist will be John Wagner. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be in the Manning Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Aaron McClellan, Corey McClellan, Corey McClellan, Tyler McClellan, Brian Johnson, Bret Johnson, Issac Broich, and Justin Broich. Military honors will be conducted by the Ehlers-Gerken Post American Legion of Arcadia.
