Lon Eugene Diers, age 84, of Carroll, IA, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 19, 2020.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at St John Catholic Church in Arcadia with Fr. Timothy Schott as Celebrant and Fr. Richard Remmes as Concelebrant.  Lector for the Mass will be Dave Diers.  Honorary gift bearers will be Rachel and Ty Brown and their children Cullen and Calvin.  Music for the Mass will be by Sharon Bierl.  Eucharistic Minister will be Mary Jo Berning.  Casket bearers will be Lon’s grandchildren: Rachel Brown, Jake Logan, Sidney Logan, Alex Diers, Kobe Diers, Luke Diers, and Faith Diers.  Burial will be at St John Catholic Cemetery in Arcadia, IA.

Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 10:00 A.M. – 12:15 P.M. on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Anthony Hospice.

Those in attendance at Lon’s visitation and Mass are asked to abide by Covid – 19 guidelines and facemasks are required at the funeral home and at the church.

Lon Eugene Diers was born on November 21, 1936 in Arcadia, IA.  He died at home in Carroll, IA of prostate cancer with his loving family around him.  Lon was the son of Arthur and Loretta (Niehaus) Diers.  Lon grew up in Arcadia, attended St John grade school and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1955. He attended Commercial Extension School of Business in Omaha.  Lon served six years in the Army Reserves following college.  Lon married Roselyn Badding on Sept 7 th , 1957 at St John Catholic Church in Arcadia.  He worked for JC Penney Company in Decorah and Waterloo.  After five years the couple moved back to Arcadia where they owned and operated Diers Grocery for 16 years and raised their family.   Loving politics, he served as mayor of Arcadia for two terms.  They moved to Carroll in 1978 where he managed the Carroll Country Club. He then opened the Carroll Can Redemption which he owned for 25 years.  Continuing his civic interest, he served on the Carroll City Council for four years.  His unbending faith lead him to be an active member of the Holy Spirit Catholic parish where he ushered for many years and was a member of the Carroll Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge.  He was adopted as a member of Al’s Corner card group where he won many free cups of coffee by cutting cards with the owner.  He also enjoyed coffee with friends all through his life, trying to solve the world problems and knowing they would come back the next day and do the same.

Lon enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play any sport.  He loved gardening, trying to produce the perfect tomato.  Lon and Roselyn loved to travel and visited all the lower 48 states with Arizona being one of their favorite spots.  Because of his interest in history, they visited every presidential library.  A trip to Rome for Mother Teresa’s beatification was the highlight of his travels.  He was a man of few words who was generous and made many anonymous donations in his lifetime.

Lon is survived by his wife Roselyn of Carroll: his five children and families.  Sue Renault (Dan) of Olathe, KS, Dave of Des Moines, IA,  Barb Logan (Bruce) of St Mary, IA, Bill of Omaha, NE, and Doug (Dr. Jen Diers) of Pella, IA;  grandchildren; Elle Renault, Rachel (Ty) Brown, Jake Logan, Sidney Logan, Alex, Kobe, Luke, Faith, Esther, Lucy, Emmanuel, Sarah, and Grace Diers, great grandsons, Cullen and Calvin Brown; sisters-in-laws Ruth Diers, Mary Jo Berning, Dr. Janet Badding, Joni Badding, Mardy Badding, Surge Badding, and brother-in-law Elmer Bedford.  He was preceded in death by his parents Art and Loretta, his mother and father-in-law Bill and Rose Badding, his sister Inez Winker and brother Don, brother-in-law Darrell Winker, Bob Badding, Don Badding, Bill Badding, Joe Badding, Pete Berning and sister-in-law Kathy Bedford and Carolyn Badding.
