Lillian Lydia Hermansen

Lillian Lydia Petersen Hermansen, age 92, of Scranton, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Born on August 21, 1915 at Audubon County, Iowa she was the daughter of S.P. and Emma (Jensen) Petersen. Lillian was affectionately known to family and friends as “Toots”. She attended Elementary Schools in Viola and High School in Scranton and Audubon where she graduated in 1932. In 1964 she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and in 1970 her Master of Science in Education from Drake University. She taught country school until December 24, 1937 when she married James W. Hermansen. During his four years of military service she worked as a cashier in various post exchanges in Kentucky and Alabama. She taught school in Farlin for several years. After her son Jim started to school she returned to teaching at Glidden-Ralston for a total of 30 years. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church at Scranton, and has been a member of Pleasant Ridge Community Church where she was active in the Women’s Missionary, selecting greeters, selecting music, and playing the piano. She was a member of the Ralston Club, a birthday club, the Retired Teachers Association, the Glidden Auxiliary, and she did volunteer work at schools. Surviving are her son James Hermansen and his wife Cyndi of Scranton; three granddaughters: Jennifer Kramer and her husband Andrew of Neola, Iowa, Lindsay Thooft and her husband Jeremy of Glidden, and Danielle Hermansen of Scranton; a brother Emmert Petersen and his wife Juanita of Coon Rapids, a sister-in-law Lucille Petersen of Ames, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers Daniel and Emanuel Petersen, her great grandsons Dillan and Dayton Thooft, and in-laws Nona and Floyd Hermansen. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Pleasant Ridge Community Church south of Glidden with Rev. Keith Ellis officiating. Music for the service will be by the Pleasant Ridge Community Church Choir. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Rod Wolf, Glen Christensen, Scott Antisdel, Butch Gregory, Bob Gregory, and Wayne Seaman. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery near Scranton.
