The family moved to Ravenna, Nebraska when Leona was three years old. She was baptized in Ravenna and attended the Ravenna Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1944. She attended summer school at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1948, she moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and was employed as a telephone operator.

On April 17, 1949, she was united in marriage to Max A. Sherwood at the Christian Church in Lincoln. They were blessed with three children, Nancy, Craig, and Brian.
