Leona F. Mccaffrey

Leona F. McCaffrey, age 89, of Carroll passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the Carroll Health Center in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, November 16, 2007 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll with Father Timothy Schott officiating. Friends may call after 2:30 P.M. on Thursday at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by the parish. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Lector for the service will be Bill Polking. Gift bearers will be Kimberly Davis and Stacy McCaffrey. Eucharistic ministers will be Dave Rehm and Marylin Foley. Casket bearers will be Lenice Thelen, Allen Thelen, Leo Neppl, Gene Kelly, Ron Lutwitze, and Kevin Caltrider. Born on September 14, 1918 at Breda, Iowa, she was the youngest daughter of Nick and Katherine (Julich) Thelen. She attended St. Bernard's School in Breda and graduated from St. Bernard's High School in 1936. After graduation she remained at home and worked as a switchboard operator for the Breda Telephone Company. In 1941 she moved to Chicago, Illinois and was trained for long-distance service by the Illinois Bell Telephone Company. She was employed by the Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Waukegan, Illinois and later transferred to the Great Lakes Naval Base. She was married to Donald McCaffrey on February 3, 1951 at St. Bernard's Church in Breda with Father Lawrence Bruch officiating. The couple moved to their farmstead near Guthrie Center where they lived until moving to Carroll in 1961. She was employed at Kasperbauer Cleaners for a number of years. She then worked at St. Anthony Hospital for 12 years until retirement. She retired in 1984 and enjoyed many hobbies: gardening, planting flowers, traveling, and fishing with the granddaughters. Survived by a son Mike McCaffrey of Carroll; two granddaughters: Kimberly Davis and her husband Shane of Waterloo and Stacy McCaffrey of Ames; and a great grandson Camden Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald on August 23, 2002, brothers: John Thelen and his wife Pauline, Math Thelen and his wife Philomena, Fred Thelen and his wife Matilda, Paul Thelen, and Engelbert Thelen, sisters: Julia Neppl and her husband Ed, Martha Heinrichs and her husband Leo, Appolloina Neppl and her husband Engelbert, Marie Thelen, Helen Kelly and her husband Roy, and Helouise Bernholtz and her husband Aloyious.
