Leo Richard Mayr, age 89, of Carroll passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:00 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Barb McDermott as organist. Lector Austen Bierl. Gift Bearers will be Grandchildren: Airel Bierl, Austen Bierl, Alexa Bierl, Kelsey Amundson, and Hannah Amundson. Casket Bearers will be John Mayr, Molly Amundson, Margie Bierl, Kevin Bierl, Steve Amundson, and Austen Bierl. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery near Arcadia with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Anthony Hospice and may be left at the funeral home or the church. Born on September 28, 1925 in Corley, IA, he was the son of Frank and Franzisca (Bauer) Mayr. He grew up in Harlan and graduated from Harlan High School. Leo enlisted in the United States Navy following high school and served in the Pacific during WW II. Following his military service he attended the University of Iowa where he earned a degree in accounting. He was married to Helen Jane Collison on June 16, 1951 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia by Fr. Stork. The couple made their home in Harlan where Leo worked for the Rural Electric Cooperative as an accountant. Leo and Helen moved to Carroll in 1953 where he was the manager of KCIM Radio Station and later pioneered the FM station KKRL. He was active in the Carroll Knights of Columbus, the Carroll Elks Lodge and the Carroll American Legion. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish. Leo enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, spending time at Lake Okoboji, and being with his family and friends. Leo is survived by his wife Helen Jane of Carroll; a son John Mayr of Okoboji; four daughters: Margie Bierl and her husband Kevin of Scottsdale, AZ, Heidi Mayr of Cleveland, OH, Molly Amundson and her husband Steve of Scottsdale, AZ, and Ann Mitchell and her husband Ken of Cave Creek, AZ; six grandchildren: Ariel, Austen, and Alexa Bierl, Kelsey, Hanah Amundson, and Ryan Mitchell; two sisters-in-law: Mary Boell of Bemidji, MN, and Jan Collison of Rockwell City; and many nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Jane in infancy, a son Anthony in infancy, two brothers: Rudy Mayr and his wife Ruth and Harold Mayr and his wife Martha.
