Leah Jean Davis, age 89, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and formerly of Glidden, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the Glidden United Methodist Church with Rev. Jessica Rockhold officiating. Organist for the service will be Mary Ross and Al Bossman will be soloist. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 12:00 P.M. on Friday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be grandsons: Monte Wagner, Michael Wagner, Scott Bossman, and great grandsons: Joshua Wagner, Cody Wagner, Tate Wagner, Shane Wagner, and Joel Wagner. Honorary casket bearers will be Hailey Wagner, Paige Wagner, Cole and Carson Sundem, Jalen Wagner, Daeja, Genet, and Elijah Johnson, and Benjamin and Samuel Bossman. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.
Born on December 12, 1920 at Carroll, Iowa, she was the daughter of Harold and Florence (Carlson) Markley. She grew up on a farm south of Glidden and graduated from Glidden High School. She then attended normal teachers training in Cedar Falls and taught country school in Carroll and Greene counties for seven years. She was married to Lloyd Davis on July 9, 1944 at Jefferson, Iowa. The couple lived in Farlin and Churdan before moving to Glidden in 1946. Leah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Glidden where she held many offices and was active in UMW for which received a lifetime membership pin. She was also a member of Get Together Club, the Open Door, Eldeen Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Retired Teacher’s Association, and she worked on the Blood Mobile for over 25 years. Leah was named the outstanding Gliddenite in 1985. In her spare time she enjoyed writing the column “Down Memory Lane” for the Glidden
Graphic, playing Skip Bo, gardening, cooking, square dancing, and watching her grandchildren play sports.
Surviving are her daughter Kay Bossman and her husband Alan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Monte Wagner and his wife Kristi of Platte, South Dakota, Michael Wagner and his wife Jeanne of Rapid City, South Dakota, Tara Sundem and her husband Chad of Gilbert, Arizona, Kami Johnson of Gilbert, Arizona, and Scott Bossman and his wife Donna of Onalaska, Wisconsin; fifteen great grandchildren: Joshua, Cody, Tate, Hailey, Shane, Joel, Paige, Cole, Carson, Jalen, Daeja, Genet, Elijah, Benjamin, and Samuel; a sister Donna Kernen and her husband Lysle of Paradise, California. a sister-in-law Vivian Adams and her husband Harold of Elk River, Minnesota; a sister-in-law Betty Barrow of Jefferson; a brother-in-law Leo Davis of Jefferson; and a brother-in-law Dean Davis and his wife Susan of Glidden; She was preceded in death by parents and a sister Lois Lawler.
