Lavern Merle Henson

LaVern Merle Henson, age 70, of Carroll passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 22, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll with the Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating. Organist for the service will be Jan Potthoff. Casket bearers will be Dwaine Henson, David Henson, Todd Henson, Mike Henson, Jon Henson, and Jason Heuton. Honorary casket bearers will be LaVern’s grandchildren. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Lidderdale with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Thursday where there will be a prayer service held at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on October 25, 1945 in Sac City, IA, he was the son of Gail and Helen (Wright) Henson. LaVern grew up in Sac City where he attended Sac Community School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1963. He served in Viet Nam until 1967 when he was honorably discharged and returned home to Sac City. He trained horses, drove a semi, and later went to work for Crouse Cartage Company as a Thermo King mechanic and driver. He was married to Cheri Heuton on January 21, 1972 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale. LaVern and Cheri lived in Lidderdale where they raised their family. His passion was farming and he also enjoyed following NASCAR and football, going to the casino, boating, reading Louis L’Amour books, and he loved to watch his grandson Alex play AAA Hockey. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll. LaVern is survived by his wife Cheri of Carroll; three sons: Cory Henson of Omaha, Jess Reiling (Carrie) of Dallas Center, and Joe Henson of Grimes; six grandchildren: Corynne, Brody, Macee, Kyndall, Alex, and Katelynn; three sisters: Barb Christiansen (Waldo) of White Bear Lake, MN, Lola Paeper (Russell) of Cherokee, and Janet Niles of Cherokee; three brothers: Marlin Henson (Bonnie) of Sac City, Howard Henson (Rosemary) Storm Lake, and Darrell Henson (Linda) of Omaha; his in-laws: Cindy and Scott Wenck of Lidderdale, John and Carlyss Heuton of Carroll, and Jeff Heuton of Carroll; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. LaVern was preceded in death by his parents Gail and Helen Henson, a brother Don Henson, his mother and father-in-law Duane and Betty Heuton, and three nephews: David Wenck, Ryan Heuton, and Jeff Henson.
