Larry Craig Emery, age 66, of Coon Rapids passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Terry Ann Mogensen officiating. Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids with military honors conducted by the Coon Rapids American Legion. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday evening at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rpaids and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on January 19, 1950 in Manning, IA, he was the son of Wendell and Lulu (Cretsinger) Emery. He grew up in Coon Rapids where he graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1968. Following high school he went to work for Continental Telephone of Iowa in Lake View. Larry was drafted into the United States Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam until 1971 when he was honorably discharged. He was married to Barbara Nielson on May 22, 1971 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. The couple made their home in Lake View where he continued working for the telephone company. Larry and Barb moved to Richland, IA, in 1977 with his job. They moved back to Coon Rapids in 2006. He was a member of the Coon Rapids American Legion and he served on the Richland Volunteer Fire Department and was in the Richland Jacee’s. Larry enjoyed fishing, going to coffee at T&D Standard, trucking with his brother-in-law, going to Bearcat games, and helping people. He loved to give gifts and spend time with his family especially his grandchildren. Larry was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsey in 2009 and has made his home at Thomas Rest Haven since December of 2015 where he received excellent care. Left to cherish Larry’s memory are his wife Barb of 45 years; daughter Stacey Dewey (Jeff) of Bondurant; a son Eric Emery (Cheri) of Denison; seven grandchildren: Benjamin and Abigail Auxier, Hunter, Easton, and Payton Emery, and Samantha and Zachary Dewey; three sisters: Marilyn Bakenhus, Jo Ann Adamson, and Janice Headlee (Charles); two brothers: Wendell Emery (Linda) and Richard Emery (Janice); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers: Elwin, Darrell, and James.
