Kenneth Henry Tranter, age 92, of Carroll passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, November 4, 2013 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Rod Roberts officiating. Organist for the service will be Trish Roberts. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Casket bearers will be Alan Thompson, Randy Kernen, Kyle Thompson, Paul Tranter and Rod Roberts. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral from 2:00 P.M. on Friday until the time of service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on September 6, 1924 in Carroll, IA, he was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Goodman) Tranter. Ken grew up in Ralston where he attended school through the 10th grade and graduated from Glidden High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army at Camp Dodge in Des Moines, was assigned to the infantry. Ken took basic training at Ft. McClellan, AL, applied for pilot training, and moved to Miami Beach, FL. He transferred to Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, FL for aerial gunnery training and was assigned as an instructor teaching French and Chinese pilots. He was married to Wilma Doris Kernen on February 25, 1944 at the Methodist parsonage in Carroll. Ken was honorably discharged from military service in 1946 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO, and returned to Carroll where he worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and Shell Oil Company. In March of 1951 he was recalled to military service and assigned to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. He transferred to Topeka, KS with a group to re-open Forbes Air Force Base. Ken was assigned to the 319th Bomb Squadron, 90th Air Wing in administration acting as 1st Sargent for 22 months. Ken and Wilma returned to Carroll to discover Shell Oil had sold the plant and offered Ken a job in Long Beach, CA. Ken worked at the Shell Oil Refinery in Long Beach, CA, in purchasing. After his retierment in 1982, and Ken and Wilma lived in several locations in California and Nevada before returning to Carroll in 2001. Ken and Wilma loved to travel and went on several memorable cruises. Ken is survived by a sister Dolores Tranter Johnson of California; and several nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Russell Tranter, a sister Marian Jordan, and his wife Wilma in 2014.
