Alma June Bennett, lovingly known as June, was born in War Eagle Mills, Arkansas, to Gunner (Bun) and Cuba (Coger) Morriss. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Iowa, where she was raised alongside her four brothers and one sister. The Morriss family made their home near the Raccoon River in Greene County, Iowa, at a place known as Horseshoe Bend. Self-sufficient by nature, the family maintained large gardens—a tradition June continued throughout her life.

June began her education in local country schools and later graduated from Jefferson High School after completing normal training for teachers. She launched her teaching career at Kendrick School #4, instilling a love of learning in countless students.

On February 25, 1944, June married LeRoy Bennett in a ceremony held at his parents’ home near Glidden. Together, they built a life rich with service to their community. June served as a teacher, 4-H leader, homeroom parent, and president of the US Friends (Quaker) Women for many years. After LeRoy suffered a debilitating stroke, June began working full-time for the Elderbridge Agency, where she served for 14 years. Even after retirement, she continued supporting the elderly well into her 80s through her volunteer work with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for over 23 years and the Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) for a decade.

Her service was recognized by Governor Terry Branstad, with whom she shared a warm connection. June always greeted the governor with a smile and remarked with a twinkle in her eye, "I like Terry, but I would never vote for him." One of her favorite volunteer activities was leading Country School programs at area nursing homes, bringing joy and nostalgia to residents.

June cherished her family deeply, following her grandchildren’s activities with unwavering support. She went through two cars and countless bleacher seat pads attending their games, concerts, and events. For decades, she hosted every holiday gathering, known for her fried chicken, holiday cookies, fruit pies, and the tradition of serving homemade ice cream after dinner. Christmas was especially meaningful to her, and she began her holiday preparations in June each year to make every celebration special.

A devout Christian and a devoted Quaker, June lived by Jesus’ teachings of love and compassion. She often reflected, "Life has been good to me; God has truly blessed me."

June is survived by her children, Nancy Lea Bonnichsen of Gray, Iowa, and Steven Bennett (Leslie) of Windsor Heights; her grandchildren Adonna Newman (great-grandchildren Michael, Nathan, and Bobbi Jo), Anthony (Karen), Blair Spotts (Ryan) and their children Anna and Noah, and Brooke Richardson (Trevor) and their children River June and Everett. She is also survived by her brother Gene Morriss of Humeston, Iowa, as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends.

June was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy, her son Jerald, three brothers, and one sister.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Anthony’s Nursing Home for their compassionate care during June’s final journey. Your kindness and respect meant the world to her and to us.

A special note of thanks is also extended to Bob Woodhouse—June's sweet pickles, which she lovingly brought to community funeral lunches, will be missed.
