John Sailer

John T. Sailer, age 79, of Scranton passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Pastor Joyce Webb officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton from 5 – 7 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and the congregation will sing. Casket bearers will be Charlie Duff, Donnie Badger, Donnie Meiners, Mark Kneifl, Josh McNeil, and Ray Cornelius. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Iowa National Guard. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on January 7, 1936 in Scranton, he was the son of Edwin and Jessie (Corn) Sailer. John grew up in Scranton and graduated from Scranton High School in 1955. He enlisted in the United States Army and served three years stationed in Germany. He was married to Lanore Davis on February 14, 1958 in Ft. Hood, TX. The couple lived in Germany while John served in the Army and moved back to Scranton after his military service. John farmed south of Scranton and he also sold seed corn for the Garst and Thomas Company. John and Lanore divorced in 1974 and he was later married to Kay McMahon. They divorced and he was married to Janet Heywood in 1988. He was a member of the Scranton United Methodist Church and the Scranton V.F.W. John enjoyed playing cards, cigars, dancing, watching television, visiting with his friends, and spending time with his family. John is survived by a son Sean Sailer of Scranton; a daughter Loretta Byerly and her husband D.J. of Scranton; two step-daughters: Nicki Heywood of Des Moines and Addie Heywood of Minneapolis; four grandchildren: Lisa Sailer and her fiancé Ray Cornelius of Scranton, Stephaine Sailer of Lebanon, MO, Lexi McNeil and her husband Josh of Ft. Dodge and Freedom Byerly of Ames; a great grandson Ethan Cornelius and a great granddaughter Brooke Cornelius; a sister Carolyn Franey and her husband Jerry of Houston, TX; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters: Margaret Hart and Lillian Nelson.
