John D. “Mike” Mixsell, 74, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, March 5 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
He was born March 22, 1939 in Bethlehem, Pa., son of John D. and Josephine Cummings Mixsell. He married Judy Bruner June 13, 1964 and they were later divorced.
Mike was employed in various positions of the administration at the University of Northern Iowa. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include: a son, Robert (Matt) Mixsell of Davenport; four daughters, Mary (Chris) Foy of Waverly, Heidi (Juan) Ulloa of Lansing, Kan., Heather Brustkern of Waterloo and Kate (Mike Thompson) Mixsell of Dubuque; five grandsons, Andrew, Juan, Thomas, Jacob and Sam; five granddaughters, Madeline, Katie, Isabelle, Sydney and Kyla; and two brothers, Steve (Maggie) Mixsell of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Hank (Sally) Mixsell of New Haven, Conn.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, John Davis III.
Mike was an avid UNI Wrestling fan and a member of the Wrestling Booster Club. For many years his booming voice could be heard over the West Gym as the announcer of every home meet. His passion and love for his grandchildren showed as he stood in the stands and cheered them on in everything from soccer, to football, to wrestling. His supportive presence will be greatly missed.
