Joan Platt, age 92, of Arlington Heights, IL, formerly of Glidden, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at the Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Soloist will be Carl Wilburn and Becky Miller as organist. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden.

Joan was born on January 11, 1930 in Charter Oak, IA. She was the daughter of William Henry and Elsie Marie (Koch) Kunze. Joan was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She grew up in Charter Oak where she attended St. John’s school as a girl and graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1947. Following high school she earned a B.S. in Elementary Education. She taught second grade in Glidden for five years and then twenty-seven years for the Carroll Community School District in the remedial reading department teaching in Roselle, Halbur, Templeton, Breda, Mt. Carmel, Fairview, and Kuemper Schools.
Joan was married to James Platt on July 8 th , 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. The couple made their home in Glidden where they raised their children. Joan was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden where she took part in church activities, held office in the Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, accompanied services on the piano, sang in the choir and cantatas. Joan and Jim were active members of the Lutheran Laymen’s League and she also volunteered with St. Anthony’s Hospice. Joan enjoyed working evenings at St. Anthony Hospital Coffee Shop. She was also a member of the singing group called the Notables, a triple trio which sang at many functions. She was a member of the Carroll Community Chorus and took part in musical productions at the Carroll Recreation Center. Joan also gave piano lessons in her home. She enjoyed playing Bridge and she and Jim enjoyed many winters in Arizona in their camper.
Joan is survived by her son: David James Platt of Salida, CO; daughter, Ann (Paul) of Gurnee, IL; sister-in-law Janet Bender of McKinney, TX; brother-in-law Lynn Platt (Ann) of Bondurant, IA; sister in-law Darlene Platt of Grinnell, IA; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James in 2009, son William in 2019, and three sisters: Evelyn, Marjorie, and Bernadine, and a brother William.
