Joan was born on March 5, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Glenn D. and Maxine (Gumble) Peters. She grew up in Greenwood, Nebraska, where her family lived until 1945, when they moved to Omaha. Joan attended Omaha Central High School and, after graduation, began her career with Burroughs Corporation.
It was at Burroughs that Joan met Norman Hutcheson when he interviewed for a position there. Their chance meeting was, as the family tells it, love at first sight. They were married in 1957 and began their life together in Carroll, Iowa, where they raised their two sons.
Joan initially worked as an office manager for Morrow CPA before spending 25 years with Center Pharmacy. She retired in 1993. After Norman’s retirement, the couple enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, Arizona, and Destin, Florida.
Joan and Norman were active members of Carroll United Methodist Church and even attended the church’s first service in its current building in 1957. Joan was also deeply involved in the Order of the Eastern Star and United Methodist Women’s groups.
Her days were enriched by quilting groups, book clubs, and weekly coffee gatherings with friends. These activities brought Joan many wonderful friendships for which she was always grateful. Above all, her favorite days were those spent with family and friends.
Joan is survived by her husband of 69 years, Norman; her son, Delane, and his wife, Christian, of Southlake, Texas; her son, Neil and his wife Verda, of Evergreen, Colorado; and Joan’s younger sister, Dale, of Gladstone, Missouri.
Joan will be remembered for her Christian spirit, warmth, devotion to family, generous soul, and the many friendships she treasured throughout her life.
