Jim was born on February 13, 1958 in Orange City, Iowa and he was the son of Henry Dale and Margaret Annette (Bastermeyer) Hubers. He graduated from Maurice Orange City High School in 1976, was a member of the National Honor Society and the only person at MOC to be kicked out of Study Hall for life. On April 11, 2009, he was united in marriage to Laura Comito in Carroll. He was employed by SR Graphics and Quebecor in Carroll for several years until he started his career as an IT Specialist at Availa Bank in Carroll until he retired in 2020.

Jim was a member of the Masonic Signet Lodge #264 in Carroll where he was a willing participant in the lodge’s Annual Christmas Dinner and The Flight Breakfast. He was voluntold to be part of the Carroll Community Theatre, grumped about it but secretly enjoyed every minute of it where he worked behind the scenes building sets and haunted houses. He found a solution to every problem and made lasting friends.

He enjoyed bowling with a great group of guys. He bowled in two different leagues and participated in any tournament he could. Golf was also something he was passionate about. He not only played Thursday night men’s league and Wednesday senior league after he retired but took every opportunity to golf on different courses around the country. He thought his epitaph should read “I’m finally six under”

On April 24, 2020 Jim was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung disease and was told he had three to five years to live. And live he did. He took a leisurely drive to Seattle to visit family; drove out to North Carolina a few times to fix a few things in his daughter’s house and made many trips to Cuba, Missouri to spend time with an old friend from high school that he reconnected with. In 2024 he flew to Ireland to attend his son’s wedding and often drove to Cedar Rapids to spend time with “the boys”, his twin sons Mathew and Alex.

Jim’s love language was helping people. He could be counted on to help around the neighborhood with outdoor work and with small remodeling projects and was happy to lend a hand or a tool. He was always busy doing something. In light of that, Jim was an organ and tissue donor, a gift that will help over 100 people.

If you asked Jim what his personal achievements were he would tell you-being present at the birth of his four children, marrying Laura, running a half marathon in memory of his daughter Shawna and the day he broke 70 in golf at the Carroll Muni with his son Alex.

Jim is survived by his wife Laura of Carroll; his children: Vanessa Jewell, Mathew Hubers, Alexander Hubers (Miranda Donnelly); stepdaughter, Kelsey Hall; son-in-law Kevin Nepple; 7 grandchildren; sister Barbara Hubers Drake (Mark); brother John Hubers (Lynne); nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Jim is preceded in death by his daughter Shawna Nepple and his parents.
