Jerald J. South, age 74, of rural Coon Rapids passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015 with his family near Coon Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids with Pastor Ben Ramirez officiating. Organist for the service will be Laura Lee Ramirez. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 - 7 P.M. on Tuesday evening. Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery south of Coon Rapids. There will be a riderless horse at the church and cemetery in memory of Jerald on the day of his funeral. Born on March 30, 1940 in Carroll, he was the son of Orville and Bonnie (Bell) South. Jerald grew up on his family’s farm one mile north of Coon Rapids and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1958. He attended Iowa State University and then went to work with his father on the farm. He was married to Corinne Truhe on July 2, 1959 in St. Joseph, MO. Jerald was a livestock farmer near Coon Rapids. He raised Shetland Ponies, American Saddle Bred Horses, and registered Hereford Cattle. Jerald was a gifted heavy machine operator and he will always be remembered as a hard worker.
Jerald is survived by four daughters: Tonya Annear and her husband Mike of Memphis, TN, Tamara Bonney and her husband Dennis of Coon Rapids, Toshia Garnes of Perry, and Teresia Vaux and her husband Douglas of Coon Rapids; a son Justin South and his wife Randa of Denver, IA; an adopted daughter Rhonda Kimble of Urbandale; his good friends Darrell Whitehead and his wife Kay of Audubon; eleven grandchildren: Kyler South and his wife Sara of Coon Rapids, Coby Bonney and his wife Megan of Dedham, Jessica Harmon and her husband Joe of Baldwinsville, NY, Zachery Vaux and his fiancé Cassie of Monroe, WI, Jim Rose and his friend Chelle of Perry, Cassandra Rose of Perry, Alexandria Annear of Memphis, TN and Ely and Cooper South of Denver, IA; two adopted grandchildren: Courtney Richards and her husband Alex of Windsor Heights, IA and Lauren Kimble of Iowa City; nine great grandchildren: Summer, Peyton, Brynlee, Easton, Jace, Josie, Jett, Ava, and Tristan; a brother Thomas South of Boise, ID; and the following in-laws: Linda Doran and her husband Joe of Bagley, Charlotte Jacobson and her husband Jack of Truman, MN, Rayoma Rotert of Carroll, and Pat Freet and her husband Skip of Council Bluffs.
Jerald was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Corinne in 2009, a granddaughter Hayden South, a son-in-law Ivyl Garnes and a brother-in-law Harry Rotert.
