Janet Sanford

Janet Lee Sanford, age 86, of Carroll passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at the Rivers Senior Living Community in Burnsville, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Terry Plocher officiating.  Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service.  Organist for the service will be Ellen Severin.  Graveside services will be held at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton, IA.

Born on Sept 17, 1932 in Solider Iowa, she was the daughter of Elmer and Mergena (Erickson) Lee.  She was confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran church, and graduated from Solider High School.  Janet went on to study Education at Wayne State College in Nebraska. She taught in Denison, Iowa until moving to Carroll and marrying Jack Sanford on July 17, 1957.

Janet taught in the Carroll public schools as both a full-time and substitute teacher for more than 50 years. She was active in PEO, Bridge club, United Methodist Women, League of Women Voters, and played in golf league at the Carroll Municipal Golf Course.

While known as a teacher, she was also a life-long learner. In retirement, Janet took classes at DMACC, and was an avid user of the Carroll Public Library and the local bookstores.

Janet loved to bake: bread, pies, and Norwegian lefse were favorites. She loved summer--and spent as much time as possible outdoors, feeding her beloved hummingbirds and tending her roses.

Janet is survived by a son Jason Sanford of Davenport; daughter Joey Ravenscroft (Scott) of Minneapolis; four grandchildren: Ben and Quinn Sanford of Davenport and Piper and Simon Ravenscroft of Minneapolis, and several nieces and nephews. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Jack Sanford, a brother Elliot Lee, and a sister Palma Erickson.
