James Fredrick Platt, age 80, of Glidden died on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a short illness.
Born on January 21, 1929 at Carroll, Iowa, he was the son of Walter and Emma (Kroeger) Platt. Jim spent his boyhood on a farm near Lidderdale where he attended Lutheran school. After graduating from high school his family moved to Glidden. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, Illinois, after which he worked as an electrician with Elmer Gross. Jim was married to Joan Kunze on July 8, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He operated a filling station for several years and then purchased the Corner Drug Store in Glidden. The remainder of his working years were spent selling life and health insurance for AAL. After retiring in 1991, Jim and his wife spent the winters in Arizona for many years. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, weather watching, and ham radio. He served for nearly 60 years on the Glidden Fire Department. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden where he had served on the board of Elders and held many offices in the church.
Surviving are his wife Joan of Glidden; a son David Platt of Salida, Colorado; a son William Platt of Burlington, Wisconsin; a daughter Ann Soyer and her husband Scott of Burlington, Wisconsin; a sister Janet Bender and her husband Don of McKinney, Texas; a brother Roger Platt and his wife Darlene of Grinnell, Iowa; a brother Lynn Platt and his wife Ann of Denison, Iowa; a brother-in-law William Kunze and his wife Mary of Littleton, Colorado; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law Evelyn Keim and her husband Charles, a sister-in-law Marjorie McMillan and her husband Dale, and a sister-in-law Bernadine Hannah and her husband Gerald.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Friday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Organist for the service will be provided by Becky Miller, Allison and Elizabeth Miller, and Carl Wilburn. Casket bearers will be Kenny Haubrich, Reggy Rohrbeck, Merle McCrae, Dick Onken, Tom Weber, and Ernie Schmeiser. Honorary casket bearers will be Norm Rudi, Louis Rich, Jerry Mathine, Rick Toms, Harry Hagge, Kenny Owens, Denny Ploeger, Burce Jepson, and Jack Burns. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Cemetery near Glidden.
