James Mcgowan

James Joseph McGowan Jr., age 64, of Carroll, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll following a long illness. Born on January 3, 1944 in the Bronx, New York he was the son of James Joseph Sr. and Ann (Kurner) McGowan. He grew up in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt – Clinton High School in 1962. He then graduated from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake with a degree in Education. He was married to Barbara Goodwin on June 4, 1966 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He taught history, physical education, and coached athletics including 20 years at Holy Spirit Catholic School. Jim was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and the National Education Association. Surviving are his wife Barbara of Carroll; five sons: James McGowan III and his wife Christy of Dana Point, California, Patrick McGowan and his wife Kelly of Prior Lake, Minnesota, Paul McGowan of Carroll, Michael McGowan of Carroll, and Andrew McGowan and his wife Shauna of Sac City, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Kayla, Samantha, Madison, Sean, Meghan, Aidan, Seth, Mercades, Shane, Sunny, and Mickey who is on the way; two sisters: Helen Collins and her husband Richard of Younkers, New York, and Mary King and her husband Joe of Middletown Springs, Vermont; two brothers: Michael McGowan of Florida, and Peter McGowan of Rockchester Vermont; his mother-in-law Bernice Goodwin of Storm Lake, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Mary Beth Sorensen and her husband Jerry of Panora, Iowa, Rebecca Harders of Colorado, and Bobbi Sargent and her husband Ron of Storm Lake, Iowa; and a brother-in-law Vernon Goodwin and his wife Carolyn of Sioux City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Anne Walsh, his father-in-law Vernon Goodwin, and a brother-in-law Dan Harders. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Rev. Timothy Schott as Celebrant. Lector for the Mass will be Bev Kruger, Gift Bearers will be Seth McGowan, Sadie McGowan, and Sean McGowan, and Eucharistic Minister will be Judy Stricker. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. on Friday where there will be a Rosary at 3:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. by the Parish. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Saturday to lie in state until the time of service. Casket bearers will be Jerry Sorensen, Vern Goodwin, Alex Schroeder, Roger Wernimont, Melvin Kruger, and Joe King. Honorary casket bearers will be Cheryl Wernimont, Bev Kruger, Jean Short, Larry and Judy Chartier, John and Rita Foley and Lee and Kathy Stein. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
