James Paul Honold, age 74, of Coon Rapids passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at his home in Coon Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Coon Rapids with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Organist for the service will be Patti Patrick and soloist and guitarist will be Carl Wilburn. Casket bearers will be Chris Heydon, Nick Jameson, Doug Honold, Jerry Honold, Cliff Jensen and Stan Janssen. Honorary casket bearers will be Don Nelson, Merlyn Pahl, Ed Weis, Wendell Emery, John Hutchinson, Matthew Hutchinson, and Sarah Hutchinson. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetary near Coon Rapids. Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening. The casket will be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will continue until the time of service. Jim grew up on his parents’ farm in Willow Township east of Coon Rapids. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1961 and attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and Grandview College in Des Moines. Jim was married to Carole Smouse on February 8, 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Church near Coon Rapids. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids where Jim worked for Purina Feed Mill and Hague Hatchery. In 1965 Jim attended law enforcement training at Camp Dodge and Jim and Carole moved to Minden, IA, for three years while Jim worked as a State Trooper out of District 3. In 1970 they moved back to Coon Rapids and lived on his family’s farm until 2002 when they moved into Coon Rapids. Jim was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as Elder, President of the congregation and various other boards. He also served as an associate member of the board of directors of West Central Cooperative in Ralston; he was the Carroll County representative to the State Alzheimer’s Association in Sioux City; and he was on the care review committee at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids. Jim enjoyed golfing, boating, gardening, watching westerns and Gun Smoke, and he was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Jim is survived by his wife Carole of 53 years of Coon Rapids; his daughter Natalie Hutchinson (John) of Ankeny; two grandchildren: Sarah and Matthew Hutchinson; a sister Jeanette Brahms of Greenfield, IA; a sister-in-law Marilyn Heydon of Bondurant; a step sister-in-law Jean Wilson (Ron) of Indianola; and two nephews: Nick Jameson and Chris Heydon. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Lula Honold; his mother and father-in-law Dale and Ada Smouse; his step father-in-law Lynn Lloyd; and three brothers-in-law: Steve Heydon, Ron Jameson, and Don Brahms.
