James K. “Alby” Albertson, age 79, of Carroll, Iowa passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, June 12 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Jim’s son Michael Albertson officiating. Friends may call after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Pianist for the service will be Mrs. Nancy Davis. Casket bearers will be Derryk Tolen, Matthew Albertson, Rob Cordes, John Brockelsby, Rick Olerich and Rob Reicks. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to the Carroll High School Foundation and may be left at the funeral home.
Born on November 25, 1934 in Estherville, Iowa, he was the son of Keith C. and Iva L. (Ebeling) Albertson. Jim lived in Estherville through the first grade when his family moved to Clemme, Iowa. In the fifth grade they moved to Atlantic, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1954. He was married to Mary Lou Hedstrom on July 25, 1955 at the Methodist Church in Villisca, Iowa. He attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher’s College in Maryville, Missouri until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956. He served in the Marines until 1958 when he returned to Maryville and finished his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Jim and Mary Lou both taught school and lived in Oakland, Iowa from 1960 – 1961, Emmetsburg from 1962 – 1963, and moved to Carroll where he taught math at Carroll High School for 35 years retiring in 1998. Jim also taught as an adjunct math instructor at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll during his years at Carroll High and in retirement. Over the years Jim earned his Master’s Degree in Math Education from Colorado State College. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll. Jim’s passion in life was teaching. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle and socializing with his many good friends.
Jim is survived by a daughter Lynda Tolen and her husband Greg of Grain Valley, Missouri; a son Michael Albertson and his wife Kris of Erie, Colorado; four grandchildren: Derryk Tolen of Grain Valley, Missouri, Allyson Mead and her husband Dillon of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Lea Albertson of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Matthew Albertson of Boulder, Colorado; two sisters-in-law: Karen Albertson of Cassville, Missouri and Susie Enarson of Villisca, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by parents, his wife Mary Lou in 1997, and a brother David Albertson.
