Howard E. Johnson, age 80, of Carroll passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at his home in Carroll surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the Mass will be Clete Windschitl. Eucharistic Minister will be Florence Oswald. Gift Bearers will be Howard’s granddaughters: Sandy Davis, Haley Ashenfelter, Becca Stockham, Andrea Rosendahl and Piper Johnson. Mass servers will be Howard’s granddaughters Jordan Stockham and Korra Johnson. Casket bearers will be Nick Ashenfelter, Cory Waller, Matt Davis, Seth Johnson, Marcus Johnson, and Aaron Stockham. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a Rosary at 4:00 P.M. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus and a Christian Wake Service at 6:30 P.M. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of Mass. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for the family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com Born on November 4, 1936 in Lincoln, NE, Howard was the son of William A. and Anna Helen (Tenopir) Johnson. He grew up in Lincoln and graduated from St. Mary’s Cathedral High School in in 1955. Following high school, Howard attended the University of Nebraska. He then attended St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Radiology in Lincoln where he received his training as Registered X-Ray Technician. He served as a Corpsman in the Naval Reserves for eight years. Howard moved to Carroll in 1958 where he worked in the Radiology Department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. He was with St. Anthony’s until joining the Kuker Clinic which later became Medical Associates of Carroll. He then worked at Carroll Medical Center from 1982 until rejoining Medical Associates in 1995. The business became McFarland Clinic in 1995 and Howard retired in 2003. Howard was married to Betty Lundgren on July 11, 1959 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger by Fr. Conlon. Howard and Betty made their home in Carroll where they raised their seven children. Howard was active in the Carroll Jaycees on the local and national levels, he served on the Parent’s Club at Kuemper High School, he was on the board of Trustees at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, he was active with the Red Cross, and he volunteered at polling stations during elections. Howard was a member of Holy Spirit Parish where he served as Eucharistic Minister for the church and at St. Anthony Hospital. He was a Hospice volunteer and also volunteered in the “No One Left Alone” program, he volunteered at the same day surgery desk, and he enjoyed giving rides to the Sisters at Holy Spirit. In retirement, Howard worked at Champion Ford and Farner Bocken. In his spare time, Howard enjoyed writing letters to his family members in the military and to his grandchildren in college. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan “Go Big Red”!! Howard is survived by his wife Betty of 57 years of Carroll; his children: Jeff Johnson (Carol) of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Teri Butler of Carroll, Kaye Johnson of Bondurant, Ann Ashenfelter (Jeff) of Urbandale, Mike Johnson (Charlotte) of Austin, TX, Steve Johnson (Cherri) of Huxley, and Sue Stockham (Matthew) of Clive; 22 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Peter J. Reynolds of Fredericksburg, VA. Howard was preceded in death by his parents William and Anna Johnson; his mother and father-law Rolfe and Frances Lundgren; his sister Phyllis Reynolds; son-in-law Mark Butler; and grandson Ben Johnson.
