Helen Margaret Gliem, age 94, of Scranton passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson. Born on August 21, 1914 at Greene County, Iowa, she was the daughter of William and Nell (Horan) Duff. Helen was a lifelong resident of the Scranton area. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1932. She attended normal teacher training at Creston and Cedar Falls, Iowa. She later received her B.S. in Education from Drake University in 1966. She taught 10 years in country schools and 20 years in the Scranton school system before retiring. She was married to Clarence Gliem on November 26, 1941 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton where she held many offices and was active in the Rosary Sodality. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a 65 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Ladene Club, the Retired Teachers Association, and a local bridge club. Helen enjoyed dancing, entertaining, cooking, and traveling. She traveled to all fifty states and fifteen foreign countries. She and her daughter moved to Jefferson in 2002. Surviving are a son Joe Gliem and his wife Rosemary of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter Janette Lookabill and her husband Bob of Council Bluffs, Iowa; a daughter Jean Gliem of Jefferson, Iowa; three grandchildren: Mark Lookabill and his wife Jill of Omaha, Nebraska, Molly Joss and her husband Neil of North Liberty, Iowa, and Nicole Fisher and her husband Aaron of Indianapolis, Indiana; four great grandchildren: Alexa, Tyler, Lauren, and Jack; a sister Kathryn Adams of Stillman Valley, Illinois; and a sister-in-law Cleo Duff of Scranton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1978, a sister Marie Zellman, a brother Duane Duff, and a brother Wayne in infancy. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Scranton with Father Stephen McLoud as Celebrant. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Scranton after 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday where there will be Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 P.M.. Organist for the service will be Richard Carey and the soloist will be Sheila Pound. Casket bearers will be Dean Gibson, Donald (Chop) Gibson, Mike Holden, Pat Murrane, Mike Skalla, and Richard Fiedler. Burial will be in the Scranton Township Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to Iowa Hospice or the Greene County Medical Center Long Term Care and may be left at the funeral home or the church..
