Hazel L. Peters, age 88, of Glidden passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Regency Park Care Center in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the Glidden United Methodist Church with Rev. Jessica Rockhold Gaul officiating. Organist for the service will be Doris Bentley and the soloist will be Mary Ross. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden after 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M.. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Thursday to lie in state until the time of service. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Casket bearers will be Dennis Conner, Clark Conner, Claire Conner, John Van Horn, Butch Gregory, and Rick Hamilton. The family suggests memorials be made to the Glidden United Methodist Church. Born on May 13, 1922 at Deuel County, South Dakota, she was the daughter of Tom and Alma (Fogle) Conner. At age 4 her family moved to Carroll County, Iowa. Hazel graduated from Glidden High School in 1939. She completed the teacher education program at Buena Vista College in 1941 and began her teaching career in Lake City, teaching in several Iowa schools. She pursued further education at the University of Dubuque where she earned a BA in elementary education and then taught in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and later in Glidden. She was married to Elmer Peters on December 31, 1954. The couple always lived in Glidden where Hazel was a member of the Glidden United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the UMW. She volunteered in numerous church committees, community clubs, the American Legion Auxiliary, and was active in the Democratic Party. Hazel is survived by her husband, Elmer; two daughters: Margaret Holmes and her husband Barry of Mineral Wells, Texas, and Phyllis Peters of Ames; a grandson Joshua Holmes of Texas; two step-grandchildren and one step great-grandson; three sisters: Ruth Jeffries and her husband Jack of Vinton, Iowa, Arlene Stovall of Kansas, Evelyn Boardsen and her husband Harry of Waterloo, Iowa; a brother Dr. Wayne Conner and his wife Roberta of Colorado; four sisters-in-law: Norma Conner of Carroll, Carolyn Conner of Glidden, Kathy Conner of Oregon, and Ruth Meister of Lake View; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Jean Anderson and Mary Ellen Tew, and three brothers: Rev. John Conner, Ralph Conner, and Paul Conner.
