Harvey G. Fleshner, age 91, of Carroll passed away on Friday, March 01, 2013 at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 4, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll with Pastor Brian Licht officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Sunday where there will be a prayer service held at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Monday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Jan Hoff. Congregational hymns will be “The Old Rugged Cross”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Jesus Loves Me”. Casket bearers will be Harvey’s grandchildren. Burial in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors by the Carroll American Legion. In lieu of flowers the family will direct memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Camp Algona P.O.W. Project. Born on July 27, 1921 on his family’s farm north east of Lidderdale, he was the son of George and Dena (Haase) Fleshner. He attended country school as a boy and was baptized in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 and served until 1946 on a medical ship and in various Army hospitals as a surgical technician. He was married to Jean Parks on April 24, 1943 at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Harvey was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a station agent. He became a licensed real estate broker in 1976 and owned and operated Fleshner Family Realty for many years. He retired from the railroad in 1978 and from real estate in 2000. Harvey was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll where he held many offices including president of the congregation. He was a member of the Carroll American Legion. He enjoyed golf, playing cards, traveling, and precious time with his family and many good friends. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. Harvey is survived by his wife Jean of Carroll; three daughters: Patricia Beck of Carroll; Gayle Dean of Colon, Nebraska, and Cindy Hesse and her husband Alan of Council Bluffs; a son Jerry Fleshner and his special friend Lynne Humphrey of Carroll; nine grandchildren: Chris Beck and his wife Meggan, Holly Blevins and her husband Brian, Amanda Dean, Scott Hesse and his wife Jennifer, Samantha Travis and her husband Ben, Paul Hesse and his wife Jackie, Jessica Tunal and her husband Chris, Brian Fleshner and his wife Scarlett, and Matthew Fleshner; nine great grandchildren: Ashley, Spencer, Kylie, Jackson, Sage, Isabel, Sophia, Henry, and Claire; a brother Leonard Fleshner and his wife Gudrun of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Alva Fleshner and his wife Mary.
