Harold A. Madsen, age 91, of Glidden passed away on Monday, November 24, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 A.M. on Wednesday until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Patti Patrick and vocalists will be Nancy Thompson and Jim Tener. Casket bearers will be Mike Vogel, Josh Shirbroun, Jake Shirbroun, Jesse Shirbroun, Dylan Shirbroun, and Michael Vogel Jr. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden. Born on April 4, 1923 in Cameron Township, Audubon County, he was the son of Hans and Sophie (Lauritsen) Madsen. He grew up in Audubon where he attended school. He worked as a farmhand for several years. He was married to Betty Petersen on November 2, 1953 at the Lutheran Church in Scranton. The couple farmed in Audubon County for three years and then moved south of Ralston where they farmed for thirteen years then north of Glidden where they farmed for thirty three years. Harold and Betty moved into Glidden in 1978. Harold continued to raise Chester White hogs and also worked as a painter. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden. Harold was a very hard working farmer and had a strong work ethic but honored Sunday as a day of rest. He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors, friends, and family. Harold and Betty enjoyed their time together going to polka dances. He was known for his poetry and wrote many cherished poems for his family and friends. Following Betty’s death, Harold was blessed by the grace of God to continue living on his farm. Harold is survived by a son Richard Madsen and his wife Jan of Grimes; a daughter Ann Marie Madsen – Vogel and her husband Mike Vogel of Coon Rapids; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two brothers: Maynard Madsen and his wife Rose of Audubon and Leo Madsen and his wife Janice of Audubon; two sisters-in-law: Mary Neil and her husband Jim of San Francisco, CA and Lil Kemp of Hiawatha, IA; a brother-in-law John Petersen and his wife Shirley of Glidden; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty in 2011, a son Harold Jr. in 1975, a sister Leona Fulton, and three brothers: Emmert, Einar, and Alton.
