Harold W. Fiscus, age 87, of Bayard, Iowa, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014 at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, July 11, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Thursday at the Johnson and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Shirley Hachmeister.Casket bearers will be John Davis, Mike Davis, John Kesselring, Ryan Willison, Justin Yager, and Bruce Greer. Honorary casket bearers will be Arnold Kesselring and Rick Kesselring. Burial will be in Orange Township Cemetery with military honors by the Bayard American Legion and Gerald Pallesen as Bugler from Buglers Across America. Born on September 11, 1926 in Guthrie County, Iowa in an area known as Dog Town, he was the son of Albert and Christina (Christensen) Fiscus. He grew up in several locations in Guthrie County. He attended several country schools as a boy and during his ninth grade year at Bayard High School he went to work for Milwaukee Rail Road. He was drafted into the United States Army at age 17 and served two years stationed in Japan as a longshoreman unloading cargo ships. Following his military service he returned to rural Coon Rapids where he met Mary Cretsinger. They were married on June 16, 1948 in Guthrie Center at the Methodist Church parsonage. They made their home in Panora for three years and then moved to Bayard where he owned and operated a trucking business and a salvage yard. They moved to Carroll in 1969 where Harold worked for Crouse Cartage Company and retired in 1985. They moved to Scranton in retirement and to Bayard in 1992. Harold loved gun shows and the friends he made there. He enjoyed buying and selling guns, woodworking, making furniture, tinkering in his shop, camping, fishing, and being outdoors. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. Harold especially loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the NRA and the Teamster Retirees. Harold is survived a daughter Linda Hachmeister and her husband Mark of Coon Rapids; a son Craig Fiscus of Bayard; two grandchildren: Amy Greer and her husband Bruce of Jefferson, Iowa, and Justin Yager of Sac City, Iowa; two great grandchildren: Kyliana and Cobain; and an uncle Emmert Fiscus of Des Moines, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary in 2013, and two sisters: Esther Kesslering and Alberta Grubbs.
